It started with the idea of investigating the form of turnstiles in NYC subway.
It has a shape that looks like it can cut through a person in slides, which is very monstrous.
Lying underground looks like a root or a part of its body.
The sketch above shows how the whole monster will be if it can break through the ground
Using the same form but try to put into different functionality and situations
came up with 1) a bench on the beach 2) a skeleton in a museum
3) a character
Considering the site -- Union Square. We think that the park needs something for
people to hang out, rest and know some information at the same time. So we come
up with a data visualization installation which looks like a bamboo garden with lights
indicating the train arrival/departure underneath the station.
So, people do not need to rush if they see their train has already left. Leave a little time for them to take
a break in the park. Users will also know when the train is coming. So they can walk when the train is
approaching and get on it in a relax way.
The color indicated different subway lines and the height of the bamboo shows how much time left
for the train arrival. If the bamboo is all the way up, it means the train is now in the platform. The
higher it is, the sooner the train is approaching.
We are very happy to continue with this idea and really make our life easier. So if you like this project
and want to contribute, or you are in an organization which could possibly make it happen,
please do not hesitate to contact me and Jaewook.
